Preparation & Safety

  • Metal screening is essential — inform staff about implants, past surgeries, or metal exposure.
  • Cannot scan patients with cochlear implants, pacemakers, or certain aneurysm clips.
  • Leave metal items at home — jewelry, watches, hearing aids, etc.

Exam Experience

  • Noninvasive and painless
  • Lie still while the scanner makes loud noises (earplugs provided)
  • Takes ~30 minutes. Claustrophobic? Ask your doctor about medication.

MRI Arthrography

Common uses

Assess joint damage (shoulder, knee, wrist, etc.). Contrast is injected into the joint for enhanced detail.

Preparation & Safety

No prep needed. Most implants are safe, but always notify staff beforehand.

MR Angiography (MRA)

Common uses

MRI-based vascular imaging to detect:

  • Stroke risk
  • Aneurysms
  • Blood clots
  • Atherosclerosis

Covers

Brain, neck, heart, chest, abdomen, pelvis, arms, and legs.

Preparation

Fast for 4 hours. Clear liquids OK up to 1 hour prior.

Multi-Parametric Prostate MRI (mpMRI)

Advanced imaging of the prostate for cancer detection, staging, and active surveillance.

Common uses

  • Identifies tumor location and aggression (PI-RADS scoring)
  • Supports targeted biopsy and guides treatment
  • Helps avoid unnecessary procedures

Exam Experience

Performed with 3T MRI for best results. Read by subspecialty-trained radiologists in collaboration with urologists.
